Ed Friedman's experience of being in a coma and his poem "TIME"

Hi Dr. Escudero,

I went to your website, very impressed,
with not only your medical achievements
but with your art work and general outlook
with life it'self.

So I decided to share this with you, it was written by me after being in
a coma for 6 days, about 2 years ago. The doctors thought I would never come out of it, as the cause was a combination of no food
or water for 7 days, and massive use of
Methadone for pain.

While in the coma, friends, family, and the doctors where wondering if I was suffering or in pain, or in tourment. I was not, I was dreaming the whole time, but I was out of my body, as I was dreaming of the past and of the future, and it was so real that I had to be out of my body. I went back in time at least 500 or more years and into the future to the years of 2000 +, I saw things that are starting to happen now, with the internet, and more to come. So I got involved in computers which up until then I had never touched one, and I will be 47 April 29th. So once I started, I learned about the internet so fast that my webmaster couldn't believe it, and he has been involved for over 15 years....it's still hard to explain, but as a result my life changed, even my doctor said (you had a spiritual awakening). The biggest benefit was I lost the fear of death, and that fear ran my life until this happened, now I can honestly say I found inner freedom, which I thought could never happen. As I have seen life in the past and future, and know it will be ok, as God brought me back for a reason.

This pice on Time took me a few weeks to write, but I was never a
writer, and since have written a few more things.

TIME: We both love it and we hate it and we can't slow it down or even sedate it, we can't find a thing in Time that is so very funny as the fools who worship and love the GREEN of MONEY, in the end there won't be a single thing for them to find, as it will be all torn from their grasp by the uncaring CLAWS of Time! TIME: We both hate it and we love it and there is never enough of it, we all fall prey to the love of "things", lots of money, shinny cars, and diamond rings but remember as you touch the glowing, luring piece of gold, will it keep you warm when you're alone and very old, lost and a-drift, upon the empty sea of Time! TIME: We both love it and we hate it, hurry along now so we can abate it, Time, with it's silent thunder's marching pace, seeking all and everything it can erase, even mankind's final resting place, not one woman, not one man, and each and every tiny grain of sand, will all be crushed beneath the steel feet of Time! TIME: We often think we love it or we hate it, others wish they could avoid and not await it, an old man lies alone with all his fears, down his face pours all his LIFETIME'S of TEARS and, hovering nearby: is the great BLACK ANGEL, as he softly says, "Old One", it's Time! TIME: We both hate it and love it but there is never enough of it, Great Winged One with all of Hell and Heaven's Power, can't you just spare me one more "hour", you see I never learned of friends or love and never even touched a flower, I (beg) you now for just a little bit more Time! TIME: We come then to neither love nor hate, no more hurry, rush or wish to abate it, the Dark Wings Fold about the dying SOUL, the last "sighing breaths" and the body grows quite cold, "Old One" there is nothing more to say as you begin the endless sleep this day in a place so far far away, where there is no such thing as Time! TIME: The Devil's work is done in his idle Time, people never seem to find the Time, though some seem to have so much Leisure Time, SummerTime and WinterTime, there are even Hard Times and some GoodTimes, don't you wish to God that we knew if we have much more Time! TIME: We both love it and we hate it and we often run and rush about just to abate it, our most cruel enemy and silent friend, is just Time! TIME: I thought of you just the other day, I so wished I'd called or stopped by your way, but I "simply" couldn't find the Time! TIME: We both hate it and we love it but there is never enough of it, a little child, alone, will play, the parents work and don't have much to say and the tiny one will drift away, in Time! TIME: We both love it and we hate it, we must hurry now to await it, this abstract monster we have made and the price we will have to pay, the world's in such a mess, as they die like flies, of heart attack or of stress and all because of Time! TIME: We both love it and we hate it and we often scurry about just to avoid it, we then fall in love and take a wife, swearing it will be for "life", one Sunday run from church to our golf course, a round with our attorney and to speak of the upcoming divorce, but, only if we had the Time! TIME: We both hate it and we love it but there is never enough of it, a "son" is born, the father's proud and he is heard to boast outloud, "For Him", no sweat, no pain, lots of fishing trips and great ballgames- but I sure hope I can find the Time! TIME: We both love it and we hate it and we often rush and run just to avoid it, the "son" grows up and feels the urge to roam, the father strays, entombed, in what was once home, he now stares from a dark window, alone, and wonders why he never found the Time! TIME: We both hate it and we love it but there is never enough of it, in the Sea of Time there is a greater power we must all think of, the overwhelming, warming power of friendship and of love and should we foolishly twist this power or bend it, as only caring kindness can ever mend it, or maybe, just a bit more Time! Ed Friedman- THE FUTURE IS NOW!
